Name:   Sam Jones                                Date submitted:           6/18/2017

For all questions, consider these four areas – Rules, Mechanics, Game Management, Protocols.

What were your goals going into the season and why (some detail)?

Improve my base running rules knowledge.  Work on my chasing decisions – quicker, more accurate.

Use rule book verbiage for better game management.  Inspect my uniform closely before leaving for my games.  Fill out game reports within 24 hours of conclusion of game.

Overall how would you rate your season from 1 to 5 (honesty to yourself is the goal)

1 – Very good season, all areas.   2 – Good overall, all areas.   3 – Good in some areas, need improvement in others.  4 – satisfactory.   5 – needs improvement in multiple areas

Your overall self-assessment rating:         3                 (1 to 5)

Write a brief paragraph to explain your rating:

I had good judgment on my calls; perhaps I had 2 all season for which I was not 100% sure I was correct.  I did not have any major problems with explaining to coaches about rule interpretations, but there was one situation which I could have handled better.  Made some minor mechanics mistakes but nothing that was major or led to a bad call.  I was professional in all aspects but arrived at one game only 45 minutes before game time because of traffic..

For each of these situations give some details of good and bad (examples listed)

Rules

I had a few unusual plays but knew the rule to apply on multiple occasions.  A few times during games I would question what the rule would have been if something different had happened on a play.  I incorrectly answered a rule question during one post-game. I scored 80% or higher on all monthly tests.  I had one protest; the crew made the correct interpretation but the coach would not accept it so she insisted on protesting the game.  (Include the concept of “intent of the rule, if appropriate.)

Mechanics – I worked mostly 2-umpire mechanics and am very familiar with section of the CCA Manual which covers this.  There were a few situations in which I incorrectly read the initial play and was farther than that play than I should have been.  I have a tendency to use the “sell out” signal too often but was able to improve on this during the season.

Game management –  Overall I managed my games well.  I had only two “big” arguments with coaches and on one of them I allowed the coach to argue for too long.  My lineup card management could be better.  I was told during one of my post-games that I should have called the 10-10-5 rule on one pitcher a few times, and I did not recognize the “no pause” violation on another pitcher.   I did not have any ejections.

Protocols –  I need to work some more on my fitness and athleticism on the field.  I did not always contact the schools 5 days before game time at the beginning of the season.  I have a checklist for my pre-games.  I did not engage in any social media regarding my umpiring.  I forgot to  block appropriate dates and had to  decline 2 assignments because of this.  I did all my game reports except one.

What level did you work this season?

I worked a lot of CC; games with a few NAIA and D3 games.

Based on your performance this season, what level do you honestly feel you can work next season?  Explain why.

My games at the high-level CC went smoothly with no big problems.  I feel that I am ready to be considered for less CC games and more D3 and some D2 games.

What are your goals for next year?

Take every monthly test and get 90% or higher on all tests.  Make only one or two mechanics mistakes.  Communicate better with my partners if an unusual play happens.  Work a more D3 and D2.  Visit the Locker Room no less than once per week.

Save this self-assessment for your records, and so you can write these goals on next year’s form.
