Notes from the Training Staff – October 2017

Two themes which will be emphasized for the upcoming college softball season are getting the call right, and good communications on the field. Think of a few examples of verbal communications which should be used in both two-umpire and three-umpire crews as they move around the field/diamond to cover plays, pushing and pulling umpire movement. Verbal communication must be supported by acknowledging movement and eye contact. Learning to listen and read our partners is an area that needs focus as we work to get into position to “Get the Call Right.” Bring your examples to our Annual Meeting in January as we will share and discuss them.

It is time to start your study groups. Some of our umpires have already started the planning for implementation of their study groups. Think about the topics you want to include in preparation for the upcoming season, updating availability, contacting partners, contacting coaches or event staff, game reports, adhering to uniform standards (shoes, pants), the new rules…
